Welcome to the beginner level English page

Beginner Level English - Student & Stack of Books

These pages are for beginner level English language learners. This first, basic level focuses on the simple present and present continuous verb tenses. It teaches adjectives and their uses in simple descriptions. Students will learn how to introduce themselves and have basic conversations about a wide variety of topics.

The readings explore basic vocabulary. Each reading has a picture. Students should start by describing the picture. Then, they should read without using the audio at first. Once done, they can use the audio to listen to a native speaker read the story. Finally, review what they read and try to follow along with the audio.

There are reading comprehension questions at the end of every text. The fill-in-the-blanks sections focus on the verb tenses and vocabulary featured in each reading. They also can be used for more in-depth listening exercises.

Each reading has a discussion section to be used when teaching an English as a Second Language class. Teachers should have class conversations on each topic to help students develop fluency. Printable worksheets – with the featured image, full text, questions, fill-in-the-blanks, grammar, and writing exercises – can be found at the bottom of each page. When ESL (ENL) students complete this beginner level English course, they will have increased reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills.
