Taking an Art Class - Sketching in the park

Jeremiah is in college. He is a junior. That means this is his third year in college. This semester he can choose some of his classes. Jeremiah decides he is taking an art class.

He studies chemistry. It is difficult. His classes are long. The professor talks most of the time. Jeremiah takes notes. Sometimes, the students ask questions. They don’t understand everything. When he goes home, Jeremiah reads a lot. He does all of the homework. There are exercises. He memorizes formulas. It is a lot of work. Jeremiah gets good grades, but he works hard.

An easy art class

Jeremiah wants an easy class. He wants to learn something fun. An art class will be nice. Jeremiah thinks art is great. Art can express feelings. When you are mad, you can draw an angry picture. When you are calm, you can draw a sunny day. Jeremiah is good at art. He draws well. He’s also creative. So, he joins an art class.

Jeremiah arrives early. Nobody is in the classroom. Jeremiah looks out the window. He sees a woman outside. The woman is tall and thin. She is talking on the phone. Jeremiah listens. She is yelling at someone. She is smoking a cigarette. Jeremiah can’t understand what she’s saying. When she’s done, she throws the cigarette. She hangs up the phone and walks away.

More students arrive. They start talking. A girl named Jeanette talks to Jeremiah. She tells Jeremiah about the class. Professor Kahlo teaches the class. She is intense. She speaks with passion. They love Professor Kahlo’s classes. “But the class is easy, right?”

“Not at all,” Jeanette replies. “Dr. Kahlo is excellent, but she is demanding.”

Making an Entrance

Now, maybe Jeremiah regrets taking an art class. It was supposed to be easy. He sits quietly in his seat. The door opens. A tall, thin woman walks in. She moves quickly. She begins speaking. The students listen carefully. It is the woman Jeremiah saw outside the window. Oh no! he thinks. She looks directly into Jeremiah’s eyes. His heart races.

“Welcome to Drawing 101,” Dr. Kahlo says.
